The biological test methods and guidance documents below have been prepared by the Method Development and Application Section (MDAS)of the Biological Methods Division. Section staff are responsible for developing, validating and standardizing toxicology test methods required for Environment Canada programs.  Since 1990, 18 standardized toxicity test methods and 5 supporting guidance documents have been published and distributed to a national and international audience.   Most of the published methods deal with the testing of industrial effluents, surface waters and freshwater or marine sediments and have been developed with the full cooperation of staff from EC regional, provincial, and private-sector laboratories. Currently, MDAS’s focus is on the standardization of toxicology test methods for the assessment of contaminants and substances in soils as well as provision of further guidance on the use of statistics in the determination of toxicity test endpoints.

The Section provides guidance on toxicological data interpretation and program application of this type of data in Fisheries Act and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) regulations and guidelines. The Section also provides technical support in the area of environmental toxicology to the national laboratory accreditation program managed by the Canadian Association of Environmental Analytical Laboratories (CAEAL).
