October 16, 2001 - Jeremy Brady, ERMD:
Ship Testing between Montral and Trois-Rivires
  • The Emissions Research and Measurement Division of ETC recently dispatched three staff to Montreal to perform exhaust emissions testing aboard an Oceanix container vessel, the Cabot, which operates between Montreal and St. Johns, Nfld. The emissions testing was carried out on one of this ship's V-12 engines as it maneuvered its way through the shipping channel between Montral and Trois Rivieres. Exhaust emissions samples were collected during various speeds and loads while the engine operated on a variable blend of Marine Diesel oil and Bunker C. This work was conducted under the collaborative research program with Transport Canada with the objective of installing aftermarket emission control technologies on the Cabot's engines.

October 16, 2001 - Dr. Ewa Dabek, AAQD:
Visiting Scientist from Spain at ETC
  • Dr. Jose Leao of the University of de Vigo, Spain, has spent 10 days at the Analysis and Air Quality Division of ETC studying the potential of capillary electrochromatography (CEC) for the determination of marine toxins (domoic acid in shellfish samples). CEC is a novel technology, which can be considered as a hybrid technique of micro-packed liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis. The CEC is more economical, faster and uses less organic solvents than HPLC.

October 16, 2001 - Dr. Merv Fingas, ESTD:
ASTM Approves Standard
  • Dr. Merv Fingas attended the F-20 (Spill Section) of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) meeting held October 10-12 in Sparks, Nevada. At this meeting, the results of balloting on a new standard for dispersant testing were revealed. By request, the swirling flask test, as developed by ETC, had been submitted for discussion 3 years ago. Subsequently, this test method was discussed and put out to ballot. It is now an ASTM standard. The test method has already been adopted in other countries including Venezuela, and USA by EPA in revised form.
