June 4, 2001 - Dr. Jocelyn Par, MAP:
Business Development for MAP in Europe
-
Prof. Dr. J. R. Jocelyn Par, Interim Director at the WTC, just returned
from a one-week program/business development meeting in France.
During his stay, Prof. Par met with Sairem, a MAP licensee located in Lyon,
and a collaborator under the CCAF-TEAM project led by the MAP Division at ETC.
One of the main goals of the meeting was to assess the nature of other
feedstock to be tested under the CCAF-TEAM project.
-
Because of the marked interest in the area of microwave technologies in Europe,
Prof. Par also used the opportunity to visit various groups interested in using
microwaves as a sustainable industrial processing tool in sectors as diversified
as the biomedical industry, wood industry, and natural products. He further
discussed the final development stages of novel equipment capable to enable
various MAP technologies. These types of equipment will be installed within
EC facilities in Ottawa (ETC) and Burlington (WTC) over the summer period.
These will be used to better understand non-conventional chemical processes
assisted by microwaves (e.g., chemical reactions) and to validate additional
applications of the MAP family of technologies.

MAP Division - Welcome to Visitors & Interns
-
The MAP division at ETC is hosting two visiting scientists from Colombia as part of joint collaboration efforts to further develop applications of the MAP family of technologies. Fulvia Sanchz Leal, a Ph. D. student from the Universidad Industrial de Santander in Bucaramanga, will be pursuing her research interests in the MAP technologies by monitoring non-conventional thermodynamics effects involved when performing selected microwave-assisted chemical reactions.
-
Santander Bolivar Solano, an associate professor from the School of Chemical Engineering at the Universidad del Atlantico in Baranquilla, will be furthering his knowledge and expertise in the MAP technologies by assessing the potential use of microwaves in distillation. The latter is an important step associated with the industrial extraction of edible oils - a project carried out by the MAP Division under the CCAF-TEAM program. Both of these scientists will be at ETC for the next year.
-
Also joining the ranks of the MAP division for the next year are Patrick Thompson and Cherie Ann Dillon, both interns under the Treasury Board's Youth Internship Program. Patrick will be assigned to laboratory duties, while Cherie will be performing administrative tasks.

June 4, 2001 - Dr. Carl. E. Brown, ESTD:
Mapping missions flown by ETC
-
The Convair 580 aircraft flew two polarimetric SAR data collection missions
for the Canadian Space Agency and the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing on May
20th and 22nd. The missions collected data over the Mississippi River flood basin
(west of Ottawa), urban Montreal and snow hydrology targets in Bagotville, Quebec.

2001 FPTT Innovator Award
-
On May 30th, Jocelyn Par was presented with the Federal Partners in Technology
Transfer (FPTT) Innovator Award. The FPTT is an association of sixteen federal
departments and agencies with an interest in technology and knowledge transfer.
The FPTT, annually, recognizes the development, transfer and commercialization
of technology by individuals and teams from federal science-based departments
and agencies and their partners in the Canadian private sector. In addition,
one award per year, the Innovator Award, is presented to the federal governments
leading innovator in technology transfer - an individual who, through his personal
effort, has been instrumental in the creation and international acceptance of
significant world class research and/or whose technological innovation has
expanded the frontiers of a particular industry sector.
-
The 2001 selection was made by an independent Review Committee comprising private
sector and senior federal officials, chaired by Ron Freedman, The Impact Group Inc.
The committee acknowledged the innovative nature of the MAP technology and its
extraordinary value including the broad range of potential applications and its
benefits as a "win-win" for the environment and for industrial users. They also
recognized the significant success of Dr. Pars commercialization program and
his considerable contribution to national and international technology transfer
through outreach activities such as teaching and publishing.
-
The Award was presented at the FPTT Annual Banquet. Barry Stemshorn participated
by presenting the commemorative plaque to Dr. Par.
