January 3, 2001 - Richard Turle, AAQD:
Liaison Meeting with Private Laboratory Industry
-
David Warry (National Laboratory for Environmental Testing) and Richard Turle
(ETC) met with the International Association of Environmental Testing Laboratories
(IAETL) to reinforce current and future links with Canadian private-sector
laboratories. IAETL is in the process of amalgamating with the Canadian Council
for Independent Laboratories (CCIL). Information was exchanged on CEPA regulatory
Reference Methods, measurements associated with Canada-wide Standards, national
harmonisation of analytical methods, and laboratory accreditation. The environmental
sector is one of the few laboratory sectors that require laboratories to seek
accreditation through the Standards Council of Canada. Many other sectors,
such as road-building materials, operate without a formal accreditation program.
The current Canadian laboratory business volume in the environmental sector is
about $120 million annually, involving about 120 labs nation-wide. CCIL members
are involved in about 80% of this business. Some Canadian companies have been
successful in obtaining foreign business, especially from countries like Korea
and Japan for dioxin analysis.
