September 27, 1999 - Lisa Graham, ERMD:

ETC Involvement in PERD Fine-Particulate Matter Project

  • As part of the PERD Particulates research program, the Emissions Research and Measurement Division (ERMD) is currently collecting particulate matter emissions samples from in-use vehicles in British Columbia. Testing is being conducted at the BC AirCare Research Facility in Burnaby. When complete, samples from 70 in-use passenger cars and trucks will have been collected and analysed. The data from this study will contribute to a database of particulate matter emission rates that will be used to help in determining the contribution of various transportation sources to ambient fine particulate matter levels in Canada. In addition to particulate matter emission rate data, samples for determining VOC, carbonyl compound, SO2, N2O and NH3 emission rates will be collected and analysed. Support for this project has been provided by PERD (NRCan), Environment Canada (ERMD, Pacific and Yukon Region) the BC AirCare Program Office, the Lower Fraser Valley Air Quality Advisory Committee, and the Canadian Petroleum Products Institute through their Clean Air Research Fund.

September 27, 1999 - Dr. Ewa Dabek, AAQD:

Lectures Presented to International Ion Chromatography IICS99

  • Dr. Ewa Dabek of the Analysis and Air Quality Division (AAQD) at the ETC made two presentations at International Ion Chromatography IICS99, San Jose, CA, September 12-16. The first talk presented research results on the determination of organic acids in atmospheric aerosol and automobile exhaust samples using ion chromatography and capillary electrophoresis. The second talk, which was the joint presentation with scientists from the Netherlands and Russian Federation, overviewed recent trends and developments of capillary electrophoresis in inorganic environmental analysis.

September 27, 1999 - Paul Brunet, AAQD:

ETC Support to CWS and Health Canada

  • In support to the PM/Ozone Canada-Wide Standards (CWS) initiative, four TEOM real-time particulate monitors were tested, certified and deployed in the NAPS network (Regina and Estevan, SK; Sault-Ste-Marie and Toronto, ON). This brings to 35 the number of TEOMs purchased and installed by Environment Canada. There are now over 100 TEOMS in service across Canada. Further, in support to Health Canada, Health Effects Research Section, three analysers for monitoring nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and ozone were recently calibrated and certified by the Analysis & Air Quality Division.

September 27, 1999 - Fred Hendren:

ETC Participates in R&D Project

  • Alstom Canada, a major North American locomotive refurbishing company located in Montreal, requested the participation of the Emissions Research and Measurement Division to measure the exhaust emissions from a typical 3000 Hp locomotive engine. This testing is part of a R&D project to investigate engine modification techniques that could be undertaken to reduce the exhaust emissions from locomotives with the focus being NOx and particulates. To date, the ERMD has conducted two separate days of emissions testing at the Alstom facility with a third planned for September 30th.
