October 18, 1999 - Dr. Jocelyn Par,  MAP:

MAP Presentation at the 10th World Congress of Food Science and Technology

  • Dr. J. R. Jocelyn Par, Interim Director of the WTC and Chief of the MAP Division at ETC, presented some of his work on the use of Microwave-Assisted Processes (MAP) for cleaner production during the 10th World Congress of Food Science and Technology held in Sydney, Australia, October 3-8, 1999. Over 1500 people attended this international meeting and Dr. Par presented 5 different communications. The MAP project dealing with the extraction of Canola oil, which was recently approved for funding by the Technology for Early Action Measures (TEAM) under the Climate Change Action Fund, was the specific subject of one communication along with one dealing with a survey of MAP applications and one dealing with equipment designed by EC for use in industrial implementation of the technology. This use of liquefied gases instead of liquid solvents, a pollution prevention approach to industrial processing, has drawn a lot of attention from the various food processors. Formal request for testing under these conditions has already been confirmed by some parties.

October 18, 1999 - Dr. Merv Fingas,  ESD:

First Meeting of New Oil Spill Committee

  • The first meeting of the United States Academy of Sciences committee on the fate and of oil spills was held in Washington on October 14 and 15. Dr. Merv Fingas, a member of this committee and the only Canadian on this type of committee, was present and was charged with preparing drafts of information on oil types and properties. The committee currently has 8 members and each has a specialty in the oil spill field. The purpose of the current round of meetings is to arrive at a consensus of oil inputs into the sea. Previous committees calculated that about 40%, or the largest portion, came from urban runoff and only about 12% from tanker accidents. These calculations are important as they focus attention to various forms of oil pollution input.

Oil Analysis Lectures in Korea

  • Dr. Zhendi Wang of the Emergencies Science Division at the ETC recently visited China and Korea. While in Korea, Dr. Wang was invited by Sang-Joon Han, President of the Korean Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) to give lectures and seminars to representatives of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, the Korean International Cooperation Agency and KORDI. Dr. Wang presented lectures on the basics of PAH chemistry, oil fingerprinting, oil analytical method development, source identification of spilled oils, analysis of BTEX and other volatile compounds, and QA/QC procedures for such chemical measurements. Scientists from 15 Asian countries attended the lectures and seminars. Dr. Wang has also recently been appointed as an adjunct professor at the University of Regina.
